‘The nerve of people’: T.J. Maxx worker puts $20 viral YSL palette on hold for Virginia customer. Then another woman tries to take it

A woman almost got into a heated exchange after trying to grab a viral Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) eyeshadow palette at T.J. Maxx. That’s because another customer tried to grab it after a store employee said she’d save the item at checkout.

In a video with more than 1.3 million views, Nisa (@nisaerdogan) described her experience trying to buy the YSL palette and how she almost didn’t get it due to another customer eyeing the product.

“ I had to secure that palette before anyone else does,” Nisa said.

Her experience in T.J. Maxx

Nisa went into T.J. Maxx for a few essential items. She wasn’t expecting to find YSL’s popular eyeshadow palette while exploring the store. But when she went to the gift section, she saw it.

She quickly asked for assistance in retrieving the item, as the store locked it behind a case. While waiting, she noticed another woman eyeing the same product.

“ She didn’t ask me anything,” Nisa said. “She didn’t have a conversation with me. She was just like looking at it and then looking on her phone.”

When a store employee arrived to get her the palette, she asked if they could save it for her at the front of the store. The employee told her they would save it there and “to let the other employee at checkout know that [she has] something on hold.”

From there, they took the palette to save at checkout. Nisa thought everything was squared away. But she noticed that the woman who also wanted the palette followed the employee toward checkout.

“ I had the sudden urge the next minute after walking around that I had to go to checkout,” Nisa said. “Because people are very sketchy and like you don’t know what they’re gonna do. You have no idea what other people’s intentions are.”

Nisa arrives at the checkout, only to see the woman grabbing her palette

Nisa made her way to the checkout counter, only to notice the woman staring at the YSL product from across the way. She got nervous, thinking she wouldn’t make it in time to grab the deal before the other woman did. The woman ended up at the second checkout counter.

From across the way, Nisa could see the woman showing a photo of the palette to another employee, something that immediately frustrated her.

That’s when she decided to take action. She apologized to the people in front of her in line and cut ahead, feeling bold enough to mention the issue to the man. “‘I’m like, ‘Actually they’re holding that palette for me,’” Nisa said. “‘I came before her. You can even ask the employee who brought the palette over, she’ll know it’s me.’”

The man seemed befuddled, walking away to try and find the other employee Nisa was describing. The woman who tried to take the product gave Nisa a “weird glance” and said something that she couldn’t understand.

The employee found his co-worker and asked her about the palette. That’s when the other worker confirmed Nisa’s story. He walked back over and proceeded to sell Nisa the last palette in the store, leaving the other woman without one.

“ I pay $20 and I get the palette. [The woman who tried to take the palette] walks out in front of me, and she’s very p-ssed. I walk out because I already paid [for] everything, and I’m smiling because…  I actually spoke up for myself,” Nisa said.

Finishing her story, she emphasized how important it is to speak up, even in retail environments. “ If you guys ever have like this weird feeling, like that gut feeling, trust it,” Nisa said.

Commenters express joy that Nisa ended up with the palette

Many internet sleuths, online shoppers, and YSL fans were elated that Nisa got the palette.

One TikTok commenter said, “Good for you!!! Also so annoying [for] T.J. Maxx to not have a system for holding items. My location always asks for our name to hold it, [and it’s a much] smoother process!”

Others pointed out that their stores usually have a system for picking up items. Considering the issues Nisa had, viewers generally recommended immediately picking up hot-ticket items to avoid future complications.

“Next time you find something, immediately go to checkout and pay [for] it… [I] don’t even risk walking around with the item in my cart, I pay [for] it and then keep browsing [afterward],” added another viewer.
