The Miami Dolphins are leading the league (in 2019 dead cap)

The NFL calendar isn’t set to open for another two weeks but that isn’t stopping the Dolphins from taking the early lead. In dead cap space.

Jason Fitzgerald of Over The Cap shared the league leaders in 2019 dead cap space last night and the Dolphins have a sizable $3M lead at the top of the leaderboard.

With general manager Chris Grier and the rest of the Dolphins staring down a costly reset this year, how have the Dolphins managed to already claim the early lead?

That comes thanks to the decision to cut former All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh last March.

How does that work? Because the Dolphins designated Suh as a post-June 1st cut, they deferred $13M of his dead cap hit to the 2019 season. Miami’s endless cycle of costly, over-the-hill veteran contracts and deferring of signing bonuses/dead cap have put them in the bind we find them in today.

Don’t expect the Dolphins to make the same mistake with any costly cuts in 2019.
