The Lions have claimed RB Paul Perkins and released C.J. Anderson

The Detroit Lions announced they have claimed running back Paul Perkins, formerly of the New York Giants, and released C.J. Anderson in a corresponding move.

Last game Anderson appeared to be passed on the running backs depth chart by Ty Johnson, getting out-snapped and out produced by the rookie — each had five runs, with Anderson going for eight yards, while Johnson went for 30 yards.

Perkins played his college ball at UCLA and was drafted in the 5th round by the Giants. He played in 25 games — starting five — over the last two seasons, amassing 546 yards on the ground and 67 through the air. His rookie year he averaged 4.1 yards per carry but last season saw those numbers drop to 2.2 yards per attempt.

Perkins is definitely more of a committee back than someone who will demand touches, but he has quick feet, above-average vision and good lateral movement. He is a one-cut runner who should fit right into the Lions zone blocking scheme.
