‘The level of anxiety’: Man heads out to get a haircut by himself, all while his family and the internet cheer him on

Max, from the TikTok channel Max & Jake, just hit a major milestone. Not only is his brother celebrating it, but the community also rallied behind them to celebrate the win. The post by TikToker Jake has captured the hearts of over 8.8 million viewers. It shows Max, who is autistic, heading out to get a haircut entirely on his own. It’s a powerful look at what personal growth and independence can actually look like for someone on the spectrum.

The video kicks off outside their home, with Jake explaining the plan to Max. The on-screen caption reads, “I sent my autistic brother to get a haircut alone… this is what happened.” When Jake asks Max if he can do it, Max confidently replies, “Too easy.” As they pull up to a Great Clips, Max sings, “Haircut by yourself for the first time!” Jake then gives him a few final instructions and hands him his card for payment.

Watching Max walk into the salon by himself is an emotional moment for Jake. Despite his best intentions, he follows behind to ensure everything goes smoothly. Jake can be heard saying, “He’s got this. I’m so nervous.” Once inside, Jake records from a distance, noting, “Oh my gosh, look at him in there getting a haircut without me. I don’t think anyone understands like the level of anxiety, of like, him doing stuff without me.”

Max handles the appointment like a total pro

Much to Jake’s excitement, as seen by the colorful on-screen notes, Max sat relatively calmly in his chair. Later, he manages the payment process with his hairstylist. Even though he seems a bit restless, he stays focused, and the stylist rewards his effort with a fist bump.

Once he’s back in the car, Jake is clearly thrilled, exclaiming, “Max!! You did it! You did do it!” Max, simply reiterates happily, “Too easy,” before asking if he can call his father. When asked if his haircut was done, Max proudly tells him, “Yes. All by yourself.” When his father says, “I’m proud of you!” Max repeats it. Then, when he is asked how he feels, Max lets out a happy squeal and says he feels “Better.”

For as long as I can remember, Max has always preferred when I cut his hair at home. It is familiar. It is predictable. He knows the sounds, the room, the routine, and that I will be right there with him. But sometimes, he needs a real professional haircut. That might sound like such a small thing to most people. But for Max, it meant walking into an unfamiliar place, sitting in a new chair, trusting someone new near his head, handling the clippers, the noise, the waiting, and doing something that felt outside of his comfort zone. And he did it. Not because it was easy. Not because he suddenly stopped being nervous. But because he was brave enough to take it one step at a time. I am so proud of you, Max. People often see the big milestones, but they do not always see the courage hidden inside moments like this. The moments where you choose to try something new even when your whole body would rather stay with what is safe. Today, Max got a professional haircut completely by himself from start to finish. But what I saw was my brother growing, trusting himself, and proving once again that he is capable of more than many ever give him credit for.

TikTokers poured in from all over the world to celebrate with Max, with one user announcing, “HE DID IT BOYYSSSSS.” Another user pointed out the significance of Max’s words, saying, “The repeating of the “too easy” phases tells me all I need to know… He’s a support system that’s instilled that mindset in him of no limits and that’ll never let him fall ❤❤❤.”

Even the official Great Clips account chimed in, saying, “Way to go, Max! 💚 Thank you for sharing this special milestone with us. We’re so glad we could be part of his journey.” One commenter shared their perspective as an educator, noting, “As an autism teacher, this is the level of independence that we hope for in our students one day. Way to go, Max! 😭”

According to Behavioral Innovations, the path to autonomy looks different for everyone, regardless of whether the autistic person is identified as Level 1, 2, or 3 in terms of support needs. True independence isn’t always about doing things in total isolation. It’s about participating in your own life in meaningful ways, whether that means using assistive technology, following a visual schedule, or simply having the confidence to manage a personal task.

Behavioral Innovations emphasizes that supporting someone as they grow requires patience and the right tools. Routines are essential for reducing anxiety and supporting executive functioning, which is often a challenge for individuals with autism. Whether it’s using timers, step-by-step guides, or social stories to prepare for community outings, these practical approaches help build the foundation for success.

The site noted that this process evolves with age. What starts as learning to brush teeth or make simple choices in childhood eventually shifts toward more complex tasks like managing money, navigating transportation, or handling personal hygiene in adulthood. By celebrating the small wins and honoring an individual’s current abilities, we provide the space for them to thrive.

As Behavioral Innovations notes, independence is about doing what you can, with the support you need, to live a life full of dignity and joy. This can also translate into self-care and finding independence for yourself. Brooke Malcher identified one trick that helped her and her toddler, winning her the tag of ‘genius parent’ after weaponizing Home Depot into a tactile playground for her rambunctious tot.

In a completely different walk of life, Wisconsin resident, Holly, coped and celebrated her freedom by turning her divorce filing into a couple’s vlog.
