The latest weather forecast on whether it is going to snow on election day

Weather forecasters sent political parties into a spin after saying it could snow on election day.

However, the prospect of the white stuff descending down from the heavens is now looking unlikely.

Temperatures are still expected to drop next week, but the latest charts are showing heavy rain instead of snow next Thursday.

Earlier charts had shown that there on Thursday, December 12, the day the UK goes to the polls for the 2019 General Election.

But Welsh forecaster Derek Brockway now says: "There's been a change in the forecast for Thursday.

"The latest (chart) show a band of heavy rain spreading east. Followed by drier, brighter weather and a few showers. Most of the snow in Scotland on the Highlands. A little snow further south on high ground."

Channel 4 weather presenter Liam Dutton said that we should expect "typical December weather" over the next seven days.

He said that the jet stream over the UK will bring mostly low pressure weather with winds, rain for all and "snow most likely on northern hills".

Adding that there will be "brief dry spells and no exceptional cold."

The Met Office says that there will strong winds and coastal gales in Wales on Sunday and Tuesday.

Here is the Met Office outlook for Wales for the next couple of days:

Today: (Friday)

Low cloud and drizzly rain clearing to sunny spells and scattered, blustery, showers late morning. After midday showers merge to longer spells of rain in some parts, becoming less intense by the evening. Winds easing and temperatures will drop slightly. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

Tonight:

Lighter winds overnight. Some cloud, particularly on the hills and around the west coast. Light showers here and there during the early hours. Minimum temperature 5 °C.

Saturday:

Saturday will be mild and cloudy with some drizzle throughout, predominantly over the hilltops. Clouds will thicken and conditions becoming windier later on. Maximum temperature 10 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Strong winds, coastal gales and squally showers on Sunday, after overnight rain. Dry with sunny spells and winds easing for Monday. Tuesday will bring more strong winds and heavy rainfall.
