The latest on Dan Biggar, Jonathan Davies and George North as Wales issue injury update

Dan Biggar is symptom free after receiving his second head knock in as many games against Fiji and Jonathan Davies’ knee is improving.

That’s the positive injury update from Wales boss Warren Gatland, who today named his 23 to face Uruguay in the final game in Pool D.

Biggar was forced off in the second half of the 29-17 win over Fiji on Wednesday after a sickening collision with team-mate Liam Williams.

The fly-half was removed from play immediately and there was no need for a head injury assessment at the time.

As per World Rugby protocols with regards to head injuries, a specialist has been consulted on Biggar’s condition.

He is not in the 23 to face Uruguay but the outlook is positive.

“Dan’s symptom free, he’s being closely monitored by the medical team,” explained Gatland.

“He was symptom free the next day, which was great.

“He's seen some other people and the medics have consulted a number of people.

“Dan’s said he feels really good in himself and he’s come through symptom free.

“He’s going through the HIA protocols at the moment. They’ve consulted with a number of people on Dan’s situation.”

The other main injury concern from the Fiji game revolved around centre Davies, who injured his knee in the act of sending Josh Adams over for his hat-trick try.

Gatland revealed the knee had swollen up, but is hopeful that an extended break before the quarter-finals should see him recover in time to take part in the first round of knockout matches.

“Jonathan took a knock on the knee, he’s being monitored as well,” said Gatland.

When asked if he would be fit for the quarter-final, Gatland added: “Hopefully, he’s being managed at the moment.

“The knee was pretty good the next day.

“It had a bit of swelling and he’s been icing it regularly.

“He gets a little bit more time and hopefully that keeps improving over the next few days.”

Elsewhere, Gatland revealed that winger George North carried an ankle injury into the game against Fiji.

“George North has a sore ankle that he took into that game so he’s been rested (for Uruguay),” said Gatland.

“A few of the backs are sore and bruised from that physical encounter as you’d expect but apart from that, the forwards are in pretty good health, which is a positive.”

Winger Josh Adams also left the field after suffering a dead leg as he went over for his third try.

Gatland admitted it would have been preferable to rest him for the Uruguay game but injuries elsewhere had forced his hand.

It is, however, a positive that he is fit to start the game on Sunday.
