The hidden gem creperie bringing a taste of France to Heaton - and it’s open on Pancake Day

A Newcastle café specialising in crepes and pancakes is taking table bookings specially for Shrove Tuesday.

Monsieur Crepe in High Heaton is usually closed on Tuesdays, but the café is so popular with locals that staff have decided to open their doors on Tuesday 1 March so that customers can celebrate Pancake Day with one of their delicious dishes.

The creperie serves up a variety of treats perfect for the occasion, including fluffy American pancake stacks with toppings ranging from bacon and maple syrup to banana with salted caramel, or chocolate spread with strawberries.

Their signature sweet crepes are also on the menu, served with fresh whipped cream and available with the likes of lemon meringue, raspberry and white chocolate, and poached apple with salted caramel.

For those looking for an alternative to something sweet, Monsieur Crepe also specialises in galettes - crepes filled with a savoury filling - such as goat's cheese with pear and walnut, chicken with bacon and cheddar, or Eggs Benedict wrapped up inside a crepe.

One of their most popular dishes is the Grand Brekky, which is a full English consisting of sausage, bacon, egg, mushrooms, cheese and tomato sauce inside a crepe.

Owners Marc Reynolds, 58, and husband Gary Cave, 54, had the idea to set up their own café after being inspired by the creperies of France. “We just wanted to get out of the rat race, and just do something for ourselves,” Marc says.

Marc and Gary decided to take the plunge; they resigned from their jobs, bought a crepe plate, and two weeks later turned up at Tynemouth market with flour, eggs, milk, and Nutella.

The pair opened Monsieur Crepe in November 2016 - and were taken aback when huge interest from locals made the business soar.

The café prides itself on its friendly customer service, and as a result Marc says they see the same faces visit time and time again.

Pancakes and crepes aren’t all that’s on the menu at Monsieur Crepe - the café also offers deli sandwiches, breakfast paninis and jacket potatoes, as well as Afternoon Tea.

There’s also plenty more to satisfy a sweet tooth, including a range of cakes, scones and freakshakes.
