The five places in Wales where Covid cases are fastest rising right now

Of the 22 local authorities in Wales 15 have seen an increase in their coronavirus infection rates over the last seven days.

For the second week in a row, Anglesey has seen the largest rise in Covid with a 36% increase in its rates in just seven days. WalesOnline has compared Public Health Wales data to see the places in Wales where the virus is spreading most quickly. We compared the figures released on December 10 with seven days before.

These figures are seven-day rolling totals for new cases adjusted for population (per 100,000 people). It is important to remember that though these figures are a useful guide they are just part of the story. If testing massively increases in one place there is likely to be a rise in confirmed cases. However these figures are still a vital factor in Welsh Government and Public Health Wales decision-making.

The latest seven-day infection rate across Wales, based on the seven days up to December 15, has shot up to 548.4 cases per 100,000 population - on Sunday the figure stood at 501.3. See the latest Covid stats here.

Below are the five areas where Covid has risen the most in the past week.

Merthyr Tydfil

After a period of lower case numbers, Merthyr has seen cases grown over 40% in just a week. It should be remembered that this area has a small population so the raw number of cases is actually quite small.

Rhondda Cynon Taf

RCT has seen the second highest growth rate in Wales but is still below the Welsh average due to the lower number of cases previously.

Cardiff

The Welsh capital has seen cases soar with last week seeing more new cases in a day than at any time during the pandemic.

Monmouthshire

Cases in Monmouthshire have risen by a quarter in the last seven days. It is now above the Welsh average at over 600 cases per 100,000 people.

Newport

The first place in Wales to see widespread Covid, cases in Newport have grown 16% in a week and is now above the Welsh average.
