The Fields of Athenry rings out around Croke Park as Galway fans cheer on underdogs vs Kerry

Galway's first half performance really got their fans believing that the upset could be on.

They went in at the break up by 0-8 to 0-7 and generally were more cohesive side while it was the favourites Kerry who seemed to be more affected by nerves around the big day.

This was evident in the wide count where a clinical Tribesmen outfit only registered one in the opening 35 minutes while The KIngdom sent six wide of the target.

It was also evident in how the Galway fans seemed to be enjoying the occasion. This was particularly clear just after the half hour mark when a rousing rendition of The Fields of Athenry went up around Croke Park.

The dirge is typically synonymous with Munster, Connacht and Ireland rugby matches so hearing it at GAA headquarters came as a bit of a surprise to viewers.

Andrew wrote: "Beautiful to hear Fields of Athenry in Croke Park."

While Joe said: "Hearing The Fields of Athenry belting out in Croke Park is something to behold."

And journalist Gavan Reilly added: "Not sure many of us expected a Fields of Athenry half an hour into this… Galway well, well up for it."

While someone else similarly wrote: "The Fields of Athenry echoing around Croker at the moment."

Lastly, Cian agreed: "You wouldn't usually hear the Fields of Athenry in Croke Park."
