The fee Jeremie Frimpong to Man United could bank Celtic as transfer masterstroke racks up £16.5m profit

Celtic look set to make a killing from Jeremie Frimpong's next move as the Bayer Leverkusen right-back's links to Manchester United intensify.

The Parkhead club turned over a tidy profit on the right-back, signing him for just £350,000 from Manchester City in 2019 before selling him on for an initial £11.5million plus add-ons just 18 months later. When he left for the Bundesliga, there was a feeling he wasn't quite the finished article, but having just turned 20 at the time, his potential was there for all to see.

He's since realised that potential and is now rated as one of the best attacking right-backs on the planet. His record under Xabi Alonso speaks for itself, firing in eight goals and nine assists from right-wing-back this season and starting virtually every game for a side going well in the German top flight. On base fees alone, Celtic have made a profit of more than £11m on the Dutchman and it seems that figure will only rise.

According to widespread reports at the time, the Hoops negotiated a sell-on fee believed to be worth 30 per cent of the profit on his next sale. Reports down south suggest that United, who are "determined" to sign him, will have to pay "at least" £30m up front to land Frimpong. It could be reasonably expected the initial fee will fall in that ballpark with add-ons hiking the value of the deal further from Leverkusen's perspective.

That would see Celtic take home 30 per cent of the £18.5m profit Leverkusen rake in. In other words, that's £5,550,000 added to the profit already banked – making his £350,000 acquisition worth £16.5m to the Parkhead side, at a conservative estimate.
