The Chloe pre-fall look, which has many good styling ideas you can adopt now. So, you’ve got a trench. Wear it open, loosely with a plain knit – doesn’t have to be orange though the contrast here feels fresh. Add some flares. These could be denim, if cord doesn’t work, though be sure they fit well on the thigh and don’t bunch too much. Finish with a structured handbag. Elsewhere in this lovely collection: blanket shawls, canary yellow, below-the-knee skirts and some super elegant black sandals. Investigate.

The red patent gloves worn by Michelle Obama to welcome Chinese President Hu Jintao last week were not only in keeping with the red buzz – see Trending – but demonstrated excellent contrasting-against-navy skills. Not long after, said styling also found a place on the Louis Vuitton autumn/winter 11 menswear catwalk in Paris. This time, tan leather gloves against black with a man-clutch. In other rouge news: at the LV men’s show, red appeared in the guise of suiting and jackets, though best of all the fashion house had rebranded the hue: “Motel Red”. Love.

If you’ve been desperately wondering how to do this season’s Marni scuba look – well, you have, haven’t you? – then this Cos dress is your saviour. Crafted from heavy cotton/linen and boasting contrast glued seams, the simple shape also means it could be worn over a pair of flared trousers – in the manner of a tunic. For an added jolt – clash it with something orange. V modern.

This shoe is a trendbuster – ticking off the current new season fancy for anything-a-bit-1970s. Plus, it’s also orange, a colour being greatly championed. Also, away from the glare of the fashion headline, cord is making a stealth comeback. FYI: there’s a full cord trouser suit in the Chloe pre-fall collection. These shoes arrive next month, meaning you’ll need to style up with thick socks or tights for warmth – and then wear with denim, probably flared.

Red emerged triumphant for autumn 11 at the Milan menswear shows. But frankly why wait? This pair of Lee jeans is currently swinging from a rail in Harrods. The department store has recently opened Lab, in order to sell more affordable and younger labels. Think Raf by Raf Simons, exclusives from Topman and denim by the likes of Natural Selection. Quick styling note re: red jeans – you either totally go for it and clash up with another bright or wear with a navy jumper and boring shoes.
