As pastimes go, swimming in sunglasses is surely an all-time great. So seeing it in The Runaways, the film based on Cherie Currie’s memoir about her relationship with Joan Jett, out this Friday, is cockle warming. Jett is played by Kristen Stewart, Currie by Dakota Fanning, both of whom are brilliant. The film is a real fashion fest; the opening scene boasts a close up on wedges worn with long socks, then come high-waisted flared jeans, Farah Fawcett flicks, blunt fringes, Aladdin Sane makeup, sequins and platforms. In short, it’s a collision of glam and disco set to a rock soundtrack. Do. Not. Miss.

Toast are having a good autumn season. There is this classy felted wool double-breasted jacket – a smarter cardigan with jacket tendencies, if you will. It looks particularly on-trend with this neatly fastened skinny belt. Plus, on 16 September they launch a debut menswear collection, which builds upon the relaxed simplicity associated with the women’s clothes. Highlights will include jumbo cords, a mustard-collared knit and a waxy olive bag. Jacket, £175, belt, £49, toast.co.uk Photograph: UNIT27/PR company handout
The long glove is not exactly a casual look. However, designers from Yves Saint Laurent to Marc Jacobs have deemed them hot. The high street has followed suit – these camel ones (that’ll be your second trend ticked off, then) are from Coast and are ideal for keeping up minimalist bravado with your new-season coat. Alternatively, you’re on a road to Mad Men (trend número tres) and so are wearing them with a swishy skirt and possibly an up-do. £45, coast-stores.com Photograph: PR company handout
Heavy-duty soles are bang on the cash for men this autumn. These Hogan ones are properly bouncy and the built-up sole business is set to continue well into 2011. Prada is mad for the look. For spring/summer 2011, they showed a brogue with sandwich-like layers of espadrille, white rubber and a rugged grey tread. So chaps, best get practising. Wear with straight-leg trousers or jeans that sit just on the shoe. £195, 020-7245 6363 Photograph: PR company handout
What to wear with this season’s peep toe-heeled hiking boots? Well, the obvious actually. This pair of socks is particularly Prada-esque for a very un-Prada price. £11, johnlewis.com Photograph: PR
