The faces of the criminals locked up in Leeds this month

A number of Leeds criminals were sent to prison in the last month for a wide array of crimes.

While many enjoyed the new year with family, these criminals were starting 2023 with a trip to prison.

Some of their crimes were truly scary and would have left victims with significant mental and emotional scars, like the thug who strangled his own partner and asked her if she wanted to die.

But at least justice in some form has been delivered. Here are the faces of the people sent to jail in Leeds in January 2023.

Nicu Marin
Nicu Marin was told he could be deported again after being jailed (West Yorkshire Police)

A Romanian man who has been deported from the UK five times in seven years was found working in Beeston. Nicu Marin also wanted to marry a woman he had met after illegally entering the UK in August last year - despite having last been removed in November 2019.

Leeds Crown Court heard Marin has previous convictions for offences such as theft and fraud. It was also heard that there had been an application for him to be extradited to France for questioning in relation to a series of robberies. His Honour Judge Simon Batiste jailed Marin for 27 months, less the time spent on remand for breaching the deportation order and told him he would serve half of that sentence in custody. He said he anticipated Marin would be removed from the UK after that time.

Scott Lumley
Scott Lumley ran over a pensioner in a Tesco car park (West Yorkshire Police)

A pensioner was left with life-changing injuries after he was ran over in a Tesco car park by a violent thief. The 75-year-old man had gone to the Tesco Extra store in Roundhay Road on October 8 last year to do some recycling and had left his key in the ignition when he turned and saw Scott Lumley, 48, sat in the driver's seat.

Ayesha Smart, prosecuting, told Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday that the man - who had been described by witnesses as "elderly and frail" - tried to open the driver's side door. She said: "The defendant reversed the vehicle and revved the engine at the victim and he realised he needed to get out of the way.

He [Lumley] drove forward and manoeuvred the car to the right and caused him to fall to the ground and he drove over his right leg before driving off in the direction of the exit of the Tesco."

Judge Batiste jailed Lumley for three years and three years and told him: "The circumstances of these offences can be set out very shortly. The impact on the victim is, however, life long. He believes you drove at him - the prosecution accepts his plea to GBH [grievous bodily harm] and I have to accept this wasn't a deliberate attempt to run him over."

Judge Singh jailed Felton for six years and told him: "The pre-sentence report highlights personal difficulties in your life, your motivation and your addiction to class A drugs and I take all of these factors into account but equally I take into account the seriousness and grave nature of the offences to which you have pleaded guilty and committed against workers in shop premises which do not and should not face the hostility of customers stealing form their shops and when challenged fear a knife will be brandished at them in close proximity and threats be made.
