The end of Putin's war is a long way off but we must continue to stand with Ukraine

When Russians troops withdrew from Ukrainian territory last month, the world breathed a sigh of relief. Images of people emerging from shelters and homes to welcome troops liberating their towns and cities gladdened the heart.

We dared to hope that the retreat marked the beginning of the end of a horrific war caused by the aggression of Vladimir Putin. But sadly the threat had not gone away.

In recent days Russia has targeted at least three cities, including the capital Kyiv. They have embarked in what is considered to the biggest missile strike campaign in weeks.

Putin now seems to have changed tactics and is attempting to make life as miserable as possible for civilians by crippling their energy and water supplies in the middle of a freezing winter.

Since the war started in February, it was clear Putin thought he could roll over the Ukrainians and impose upon them a puppet dictator who would answer only to him. But 10 months later, almost 100,000 Russians have lost their lives and their country has become a pariah state.

We have supported Ukraine since the first days of the war and believe their fight is our fight. While the Ukrainian people endure we must continue to support them in every way possible. They are on the frontline against a threat to world peace that cannot be allowed to win

As the events of the last 48 hours show, the end of this war is a long way off. We must continue to stand with Ukraine.
