The Edinburgh graveyard of abandoned phone boxes causing locals distress

An Edinburgh graveyard of abandoned phone boxes has been causing Dalry locals distress.

Local Labour councillor Ross McKenzie took to social media to share images of the space near Dalry Co-op, strewn with litter and full of the throwback BT phone booths.

Once an common site in the capita, images now show the row of outdated BT phone boxes covered in graffiti and left to rot.

The councillor called on BT to “get a grip” on Twitter, claiming: “BT won't remove the boxes because they make money from advertising on them”.

He told Edinburgh Live: “Dalry is one of Edinburgh's most densely populated areas and contains very little public space.

“A square like this should contain benches and flowers, not disused phone boxes. Previous requests for their removal have been declined due to the advertising revenue BT generates from posters on the boxes.

“I hope BT will look at these photos and think about how ludicrous that is. If they remove the boxes, I'll work together with the council and local residents to create a space that benefits the community.”

A BT spokesman said: “We are progressing plans with Edinburgh City Council to remove around 50 payphones across the city and replace them with around 26 new BT Street Hubs which will provide local people with free Wi-Fi, free calls, free mobile charging, allow environmental monitoring and provide free digital advertising space for the council and local businesses.

“We continue to discuss our plans with the council and we hope that Edinburgh will join other cities, such as Glasgow and Birmingham, where our new Street Hubs have been welcomed by local communities and small businesses.”
