The Eddie Howe selection hint as Newcastle switch focus to the Carabao Cup with strong team expected

Eddie Howe admits he must get the balance exactly right as Newcastle United prepare for a huge week before breaking up for the World Cup.

The Magpies face a League Cup third round tie at home to Crystal Palace before tackling Graham Potter's Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday. Howe shuffled his team in the last round against Tranmere Rovers and won 2-1.

The likes of Chris Wood, Elliot Anderson and Jamaal Lascelles are all eyeing game-time against the Eagles. Howe is desperate to get into round four and keep hopes alive in the competition until Christmas.

When asked about his selection, Howe said: "We’ll see what the state of the players is in terms of injuries. It was another big physical effort, and I know we have Chelsea right around the corner, so I’ll pick the team to try and win the game, for sure. No part of me wants to go into that game and not progress."

Having suggested he will play a strong side he was keen to keep his cards close to his chest on whether Allan Saint-Maximin or Jonjo Shelvey would be in line to make their first starts of the season after injuries.

Howe said: "I think, right now, it’s difficult to give you a definitive answer."

The Toon boss also has Karl Darlow back after an ankle injury with the long serving stopper getting the nod on the bench ahead of out of window signing Loris Karius. Darlow starred in the 2-1 win at Prenton Park back in August.
