The David Moyes favourite who should inspire Tom Davies and Everton's next generation

Today marks 15 years since Leon Osman made his first Everton start against Wolverhampton Wandererers.

For someone who was a mainstay of the side for such a long time - ending an almost 20-year association with the Blues in 2016 - his career at Goodison Park made a lasting impression.

After all, barring two loan spells at Carlisle United and Derby County, the midfielder was a one club man.

We all know Osman was a key member of David Moyes' squad during the Scot's time as manager and he consistently scored crucial goals along the way.

But it took him some time to reach the levels he eventually did - and that could have implications for some of Everton's current starlets.

Osman joined the famous Blues academy as a youngster and was a key part of the side that won the FA Youth Cup in 1998, but a knee injury sustained shortly after kept him out of action for a year.

That could have proven significant. Who knows whether he would have gotten his chance earlier if that hadn't happened?

Unfortunately for Osman, he would have to wait for his break in the first-team until he was 22.

Sound familiar? It should.

Tom Davies put pen-to-paper on a new contract this week which will Tom Davies eyes a trophy with Everton after signing new deal - but might be disappointed with the amount of game time he's received this season.

The 20-year-old has started ten games compared to 20 last term and 18 in the campaign before that.

Compare that to Osman though, and it's already 48 more top flight starts under Davies' belt at the same age.

And the former has proven even if you are a late bloomer into the first-team fold, you can still prove yourself to be a vital player for years to come.

Osman marked his first start against Wolves 15 years ago today with a goal and hardly looked back.

Initially playing primarily on the right flank, he established himself in Moyes' team and was crucial in helping Everton qualify for the Champions League in 2005.

Moving through the years Osman would move into a more central midfield role, not uncommon to the one Davies will have his eyes set on in the future, but his influence never waned.

Popping up with vital goals throughout his time at Goodison Park, he went on to bag 57 strikes across 433 appearances for his boyhood club.

And Osman has already shared his delight on Davies picking up a new contract.

He tweeted: "Brilliant to see homegrown lads cutting it at the top level to be part of #EFC's future plan at an exciting time. Huge credit to Everton Academy again."

And perhaps Davies can use Osman as inspiration.

Granted the two situations are different, as Davies has already made his breakthrough. He also managed it a full four years before the now 37-year-old, in fact.

Everton great Tim Howard on the lengths he'd go to stop Liverpool winning Premier League

But, Osman's meteoric rise through to the first team at a relatively late stage could hand hope to Davies and the rest of Everton's youngsters.

They might not be first-team regulars now, but they can become heroes if their attitude is right.

Just ask Leon Osman.
