The Chelsea youngster who has given Frank Lampard a big selection headache

There was a surprise on the Chelsea teamsheet on Saturday afternoon when Fikayo Tomori was given his first Premier League start against Sheffield United.

The 21-year-old was close to leaving the Blues on loan this summer, before David Luiz was sold to Arsenal on transfer deadline day.

But here was the centre-back taking his place in the heart of the Blues defence next to Kurt Zouma, with Andreas Christensen moving down to the bench.

Blues boss Frank Lampard knows Tomori well from last season, where the youngster played under him at Derby County and was even named as Player of the Season.

That went under the radar for many Chelsea supporters, with the performances of Mason Mount really taking the centre stage.

The one big moment where Tomori's name was mentioned was the Carabao Cup cup match between Chelsea and Derby County, with the young defender scoring an own goal in front of the Shed End.

However, Tomori had an impressive campaign at Derby and it meant that Lampard was willing to throw him into the starting XI for his first Premier League match.

Lampard defends selections despite Chelsea losing two-goal lead

When it looked like it could be a two-horse race as to who will be Antonio Rudiger's partner in the heart of the defence, Lampard threw in Tomori in place of Andreas Christensen, and it was a solid debut.

There was a lot to like about his performance, with twice in the first 15 minutes coming out from his position and winning strong headers against Oli McBurnie.

As well, he showed a great amount of pace on several occasions, while also showing good defending ability when faced in a one-on-one situation, when Callum Robinson was looking to attack.

Another impressive moment was his slide towards the end of the match, blocking a good chance for United.

He also showed that he has the ability on the ball as well, with a lovely pass over the top to find Tammy Abraham in the first and set up an attack.

However, it wasn't a perfect performance, which is something you would expect from a 21-year-old still learning his trade.

United's big chance in the first half came when Tomori played Chris Basham onside, with a good ball into the centre and then Robinson was left on his own, missing a huge opportunity.

But it was enough during the game to impress his head coach.

"I think Tomori played very well for me last year and training at a very high level," Lampard said after the game.

"There is competition at centre-back, he deserved to play and I thought he played well. It was just a choice."

Tomori has certainly proved that he has the right attitude as well, showing real annoyance at conceding a late goal and drawing the game.

"We’re all angry because when you’re 2-0 up at home then the game should be safe," Tomori told the club website.

"We said at half-time that we wanted to up it again but we didn’t do that. We conceded a goal really early on in the second half and it becomes very difficult when you do that. It’s disappointing but we just have to learn from it.

"This is Chelsea, we’re a big club and there’s a lot of expectations but we’re here to try to meet those expectations.

"There are high standards and when we fall below those standards then of course there will be questions. It’s not always going to be perfect but in games like today, when we’re in such a strong position and then we throw it away, it’s disappointing."

It means that Lampard has a selection headache on his hands when the Blues take on Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, September 14.

Rudiger is expected to come in for the Blues, but the choice to partner him is still up in the air and Tomori is not there to just sit on the sidelines.
