The Chelsea and Arsenal players set to benefit from Uefa's rule change for Europa League final

Chelsea and Arsenal meet in the Europa League final next Wednesday.

Ahead of the landmark occasion in Baku, Azerbaijan, each head coach has been handed a boost thanks to a rule change from UEFA, which allows Maurizio Sarri and Unai Emery to name up to 12 substitutes.

Under the previous rules, clubs were only allowed to name seven substitutes for a final but the rules were tweaked ahead of the Super Cup clash between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid at the beginning of the season.

UEFA has now confirmed that the same rules are in effect for the Europa League final and a fourth substitution will also be permitted if the match happens to advance into extra time.

Out of the two finalists, only Chelsea have gone the distance in the competition thus far so these alterations could be crucial and it's possibly great news for some of the younger members of each squad as well as those on the fringes or bidding farewell.

With that said, football.london has taken a look at who could benefit from this rule change for both clubs.

Chelsea

The Blues are already without Callum Hudson-Odoi, Antonio Rudiger and Ruben Loftus-Cheek for the final so that immediately opens up three extra spaces as they would have certainly been included in the matchday squad.

Assuming N'Golo Kante overcomes his injury scare then one of Mateo Kovacic or Ross Barkley will have to settle for a place on the bench alongside the likes of Willy Caballero, Gary Cahill one of Marcos Alonso/Emerson, Willian/Pedro and Gonzalo Higuain/Olivier Giroud.

Davide Zappacosta should benefit from the rule change as well as a shortage of defenders, while Marc Guehi could also be drafted in after being named on the bench against Leicester City.

That still leave about four places up for grabs which could be filled by another goalkeeper as Jamie Cumming and Marcin Bulka are in the Europa League squad list.

Or Sarri could choose between Ethan Ampadu, Danny Drinkwater as well as youngsters Connor Gallagher and George McEachran.

Arsenal

Similar to their London rivals, the Gunners also have some injury concerns ahead of the final. It's already been confirmed that Aaron Ramsey, Denis Suarez, Rob Holding and Hector Bellerin will play no part in Baku.

The good news is that Arsenal have been given assurances over Henrikh Mkhitarayan's safety in Baku so he should be fine to make the trip and there could be a massive injury boost in the shape of Danny Welbeck.

His potential involvement could be one of five additions to the squad many are expecting be similar to the one that beat Valencia in the semi-final second leg, so Eddie Nketiah would be involved.

Joe Willock and Stephan Lichtsteiner both travelled to Spain but didn't make the matchday squad. That could change meaning two of the remaining four spots are taken by them.

Emery called up Bukayo Saka and Xavier Amaechi to train with the first-team squad last week so one would assume they are in his thoughts, but their Europa League squad list is packed so don't be surprised if Carl Jenkinson gets a call-up.
