The cheeky Meat Loaf lyrical pants sold as hilarious unofficial merchandise in Scotland

Meat Loaf's famous song 'I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)' earned the singer a Grammy and was a massive worldwide hit, going number one in 28 countries.

The phrase I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That) is repeated nine times in the song on the album Bat out of Hell II: Back Into Hell.

The lyrics of the song became one of the most misunderstood in music history and fans used to love making their own interpretations of it.

.According to some, it led to some enterprising Scots making the most of Meat Loaf's visits here as unofficial merchandisers decided to make some money from the song.

One fan explained on a forum that they thought the lyrics were referring to anal sex - and recalled he was not the only one.

He said: When he played Glasgow, the unofficial merch guys were selling Meatloaf knickers.

"On the front it said’I will do anything for love..’ and, you’ve guessed it, on the back it said ‘..but I won’t do that’."

We're not sure if the original pants are long gone, and while we have been unable to source an actual photo of the original knickers, we have found some for sale online.

Funnyshirts.org is among one of the retailers selling the pants in black but they are also available elsewhere in fetching pink and white

Meat Loaf told all about the lyrics in a 2014 interview.

He explained to Yahoo!: "Jim Steinman, who I worked with and had great success with, wrote the song.

"When we were recording it, Jim brings up the thing ― he says, ‘People aren’t gonna know what that is.’ I said, ‘Of course they are. How can they not know?’ He goes, "They’re not gonna.’"

So what is "that"?

"It’s the line before every chorus," the singer explained. "There’s nine of them, I think. The problem lies because Jimmy likes to write, so you forget what the line was before you get to ‘I won’t do that’.”

"Some of the things the song says he won’t do include… forget the way you feel right now; forgive himself if you don’t go all the way tonight; do it better than he does it with you; and stop dreaming of you every night of his life."
