The Chase's Shaun Wallace vows to beat contestant before discovery changes his mind

The Chase aired a surprise for Chaser Shaun Wallace on Wednesday evening, minutes after he made a harsh vow to a contestant.

Retired royal navy warrant officer Derek was one of four contestants joining host Bradley Walsh on the show on Wednesday.

Bradley hoped he would do well as he built up a decent amount in the cash builder, before preparing to face Shaun, the Dark Destroyer.

The 84 year old faced a harsh battle too, as Shaun seemed determined to take him down.

He told him: "Hello sailor, goodbye Derek."

But Derek immediately killed him with kindness, and a confession that changed everything.

He replied: "Hello sir. Nice to meet you, and I'm glad to meet another Chelsea supporter."

Shaun's face completely dropped, and host Bradley was stunned to see him suddenly smiling.

On learning they were on the same side, he quickly changed his opinion and even offered Derek some advice.

He told Bradley: "Shake his hand for me," which he obliged.

Shaun then took things further, asking the host: "Give him a big hug for me, Brad."

While reluctant, Bradley had no choice as Derek suddenly launched at him.

As they prepared to start Shaun said: "You're a top man. I'm gonna knock you out, but you're a top man."

Then, as he was offering different cash amounts he added that Derek was "too good" for the lower amount, and "could do" the higher total.

Sadly Derek didn't make it to the final round after being caught by Shaun.

The Chase airs weeknights at 5pm on ITV.
