The Brits 2023: Awkward moment host Mo Gilligan calls Lewis Capaldi 'Sam'

Viewers of the Brit Awards were confused as presenter Mo Gilligan appeared to introduce a Sam Capaldi - before Glaswegian singer Lewis Capaldi took to the stage.

The biggest night in British music is being held on a Saturday night for the first time, presented by returning host Mo. But the comedian ran into a blunder as he introduced Sam Capaldi. Lewis Capaldi then took to the stage to sing his hit single - nominated for a Brit, no less - 'Forget Me.'

Mo was quick to rectify the mistake once the performance was over, joking: "I have to apologise, I did call him Sam – it just goes to show how strong the drinks are at the Brits. They’re not playing around!"

But fans took to social media to express their confusion at who exactly Sam Capaldi was. "Did Mo Gilligan really just say Sam Capaldi?" one Twitter user said. "Sam Capaldi looks exactly like his cousin Lewis," another wrote. Another said: "He did not just say Sam Capaldi, put some respect on Lewis #Brits2023."

Some viewers suggested that there could have been some confusion with fellow Brit nominee Sam Smith, who turned up wearing a striking black outfit - Twitter users even photoshopped Lewis wearing Sam's outfit.

Lewis was praised for his reaction to the hiccough. One Twitter user said: "Lewis Capaldi laughing at being called Sam Capaldi while he was singing just sums him and his greatness up."
