The big five bombshell as Emmanuel Macron 'masterminds' top-level government talks across Europe to end season

Senior French government officials are reportedly locked in talks with counterparts from England, Italy, Spain and Germany to convince them to call time on the 'big five' leagues this season.

Ligue 1 ended their season on Tuesday just hours after talks surrounding the Premier League 's plans to get 'Project Restart' up and running intensified amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Both Germany and Italy, guided by their governments, have provided sobering updates in recent days with Serie A and the Bundesliga unlikely to return imminently.

La Liga chief Javier Tebas has been bullish throughout and issued a panicked update on Tuesday as he claimed football could "disappear" unless it restarts soon.

And now Le Parisien claims movers and shakers within Emmanuel Macron's government are pushing for their fellow big-hitters to end the 2019/20 season.

The latest update comes after UEFA alerted their members to make their own decision on how to end their season before May 25.

The European governing body have been determined to complete the Champions League and the Europa League by August but that plan received a blow when FIFA 's chief medical officer painted a bleak picture for a quick return for the beautiful game.

Michel D’Hooghe said: “The world is not ready for competitive football. I hope this can change very quickly, I sincerely hope that, believe me.

"This is not a matter of money but a matter of life and death.

“That’s why I ask everybody to be very, very careful before starting competitions again in the different nations.

“It is a terrible responsibility for the moment and I have a lot of objections at the moment.

“First of all nearly all the countries say you should keep the social distancing.

"Well I don’t think you can play the Premier League when the players are obliged to remain two metres from each other.”
