Chris Robshaw
The captain under Stuart Lancaster since 2012. He has 43 international caps, 42 of them as captain. Only Will Carling has captained England more. However, was widely criticised for some of his decision making in the World Cup and there are those who say he does not even merit a place in the starting line-up.
Alternatives Tom Wood has been mentioned, but, like Robshaw, will he be an automatic starter under Jones? Dylan Hartley will come into the reckoning but has suffered with discipline issues while Joe Launchbury is also a contender.
Andy Farrell
The backs coach under Stuart Lancaster, he was highly rated by the Lions in Australia in 2013. It is understood he did not emerge well from the World Cup review and in the tournament he had to field questions about the presence of his son Owen in the squad. Worked with Jones at Saracens but looks vulnerable.
Alternatives Jones is a backs coach himself and may be content with appointing someone with responsibility for defence. Shaun Edwards, whose contract with Wales runs out at the end of the month, is available at the moment, although Warren Gatland wants to keep him, while Paul Gustard was recruited by Jones at Saracens.
Graham Rowntree
England’s set pieces, if not the breakdown, were generally a source of strength up to August but turned into a weakness in the absence of the hooker Hartley. Respected throughout the game, he would not be out of work for long.
Alternatives Steve Borthwick was Japan’s forwards coach and credited with improving their lineout. It was his first job in coaching after retiring from playing and he has just started with Bristol. Rob Baxter and Dean Ryan are Premiership options.
Mike Catt
Attacking skills coach for the last three years and the most likely of the three to stay on if Jones opts for a measure of continuity, although as it is the Australian’s specialist field he would want someone of similar mind to himself.
Alternatives Northampton’s Alex King has gained experience after joining from Clermont Auvergne. Jones has a wide network of contacts throughout the world and will have sounded out those in England.
