The best takeaway in Scotland for 2023 named at Just Eat awards

One Scottish restaurant has been crowned the country's best takeaway at the Just Eat Restaurant Awards.

Chicken Union in Stirling took home the coveted prize at the event earlier this week. The takeaway specialises in Korean fried chicken, which is growing in popularity not just in Scotland but across the UK.

The family-owned restaurant launched in 2022 and has successfully capitalised on Scotland's hunger for the cuisine. Utilising a "secret family recipe" that has been used in a five-star hotel and restaurant in Korea for the last 50 years, husband and wife Kin-Chung Wong and Wai Fan So have been sharing their Korean heritage with the local community through their delicious food.

As well as serving up Korean fried chicken at Chicken Union, Kin-Chung Wong and Wai Fan So also regularly offer their authentic dishes at local street food festivals.

Kin-Chung Wong commented: “We want to thank Just Eat for giving us a chance to win this award. We just moved to Scotland two years ago, it’s great to see we have made an impact and how our hard-work has paid off.

"Thanks to our customers, and also to my wife who is always supporting me."

Alyn Smith, MP for Stirling, added: “I’m delighted to see another local Stirling business recognised for their excellence and dedication to their craft. Chicken Union is a community favourite, and has local and visitors alike raving over their dishes.

"I offer my hearty congratulations to Kin-Chung Wong and his family, and wish them every future success as they grow their business and reputation here in Stirling.”

Chicken Union was recognised at a star-studded ceremony at The Londoner Hotel in London’s West End. Formerly named the British Takeaway Awards, the Just Eat Restaurant Awards was hosted by comedian Joel Dommett and saw takeaways across the nation recognised.

Chief Commercial Officer at Just Eat Andrew Kenny said: "The Just Eat Restaurant Awards rightly shine a spotlight on the incredible people who not only deliver unforgettable food, but go above and beyond to make an invaluable contribution to our local community and the UK economy. Despite facing sky-high inflation, soaring food and energy bills and continued staff shortages from Brexit and Covid, these restaurants have demonstrated unparalleled resilience, entrepreneurial spirit and grit.

"Congratulations to all this year's winners and finalists."
