Aussie stargazers were treated to a visual feast last night when a meteor lit up the sky across large parts of eastern Australia, from Sydney to regional NSW and the Gold Coast.
The astronomical event took place at around 6.30pm on Thursday evening, dazzling scores of onlookers from hundreds of thousands of kilometres away with its bright-coloured spark and giant smokey trail that lingered for a little over five seconds.
The meteor was spotted in the skies all throughout eastern Australia, from Sydney’s Bondi and Maroubra Beach to Mudgee and Jugiong in regional NSW, and all the way through to Canberra and the Gold Coast.
A bunch of astrophysicists confirmed to the media that it was a meteor (no, the aliens didn’t come to save us), with Dr. Brad Tucker whipping out his telescope to give us a few more deets.
“The greenish colour indicates it was a meteor, usually with iron and nickel,” Tucker told 9News. “The bright flash midway means it is likely fragmented or broke apart.”
Tucker also revealed that, given its brightness, the meteor likely measured in between 30 to 50 centimetres, with its colour being a defining feature.
“Colours of objects indicate what it is made up of. Space junk is usually more yellow,” he said.
Now, in the off chance you were cooking dinner, at the gym, or watching space videos on TikTok, we’re coming in clutch with a bunch of some social media footage of the flashy moment to curb all your FOMO.
Feast your eyes below. We’ll be sure to update you ASAP when we know whether they come in peace.
