The best box sets to binge in lockdown 3 - from must-watch classics to addictive new series

The country is currently facing the strict restrictions of the third national lockdown.

Restaurants, bars, non-essential shops and leisure and entertainment venues will remain closed as residents are once again being advised to stay home to save lives.

But luckily, seeing us through another long stint inside are the binge-worthy box sets that have been on our must-watch lists for months.

From classic sitcoms like Friends and to raved-about award-winning series like Breaking Bad and comedies like The Office US, now is the time to catch up and binge watch.

And there's plenty of more recent series to get stuck into too including Snowfall on BBC and Bridgerton on Netflix.

Here's our round up of some of the most popular old and new box sets and series worth a watch this lockdown.

Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad gained a huge cult following when it first hit our screens back in 2008.

Growing in popularity for several years following its release, the show has still maintained its huge following.

The plot follows Walter White, a chemistry teacher with lung cancer who - in a bid to make and save as much money as he can for his family's uncertain future - enters the drug world cooking crystal meth with his partner, lovable rogue Jesse Pinkman.

Bridgerton

One of the more recent series to take Netflix viewers by storm is period drama Bridgerton.

The raunchy series, set in the backdrop of Regency ere England, follows the lives of the powerful Bridgerton family as each member gets tied up in stories of lust, love and betrayal.

Friends

Following the story of Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler and Ross, the 10-series box set stole the hearts of the world with its lovable characters, hilarious story lines, and on-again-off-again love stories.

As well as the main cast, throughout the seasons there are plenty of celebrity guest appearances from actors and actresses including Julia Roberts, Bruce Willis, Gabrielle Union, Brad Pitt, Susan Sarandon and many more.

Game of Thrones

It is more than likely that you know a die-hard Game of Thrones fan whether you decided to tune in or not.

The immensely popular show follows the story of nine noble families as they fight to take over the lands of Westeros while an enemy returns after being dormant for millennia.

There are eight series to catch up on if you're yet to tune in and they're all available on NowTV.

In total, according to IMDB, Game of Thrones has collectively won a massive 376 awards obtaining a total of 608 nominations.

Power

Power is crime drama series created produced by Courtney A. Kemp in collaboration with Curtis Jackson - also known as rapper 50 Cent.

The six-season show explores the double life of James St Patrick, known as Ghost, a rich nightclub owner and drug kingpin.

The show stars Omari Hardwick, Lela Loren, and Naturi Naughton.

The Crown

Binge-worthy drama and Netflix Original The Crown follows the story of Queen Elizabeth II from her wedding to Philip, Duke of Edinburgh up until the early 21st Century.

The plot follows the real-life dramas and scandals that occurred during the Queen's reign.

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air

Will Smith stars in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air (BBC)

The hugely popular 90s sitcom follows the fictional story of Will Smith as he escapes the troubles of his old life in West Philadelphia and moves in with his wealthy relatives Aunt Viv, Uncle Phil and cousins Hilary, Carlton and Ashley in Bel Air.

The show turned 30 years old in 2020 and to mark the occasion, an emotional one-off reunion special was aired showing the cast reunite and relive some of their best and worst times starring on the show.

The Office (U.S.)

The Office (U.S.) is a comedy 'mockumentary' TV series and adaptation of the BBC series of the same name.

A film crew follow the lives of a group of everyday co-workers and their tactless and childish yet ridiculously devoted boss Michael Scott, portrayed by Steve Carell.

Throughout the nine series we see secret office romances and affairs, unlikely friendships, countless themed work parties - and Michael hit employee Meredith with his car.

The entire box set can be streamed on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

The Wire

The Wire explores the Baltimore drug scene through the eyes of both the drug dealers and law enforcement.

Throughout its five seasons it explores real world problems surrounding drugs, ports, local government, the media and education.

The crime drama is now widely known as one of the best television series ever made.

It stars Dominic West, Lance Reddick and Sonja Sohn.

Series 1-5 is available to stream on Amazon Prime - but you'll have to pay from £20 to £25 per series. You could also purchase the complete series on DVD for £46.89 on Amazon too.

Snowfall

The American drama explores the early days of the crack cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles during the beginning of the 1980s.

The plot explores the violent collision between an array of characters including a street entrepreneur, a Mexican wrestler, a CIA operative, a drug-running couple.
