The BBC ageist? Not with this roster of prime-time septuagenarians

Now, what new charges can we bring against the BBC? What new “ism” goes with on-screen racism and sexism? David Attenborough (88) is just off and running with his new Life Story. David Dimbleby (nearly 76) asks questions beyond time. John Humphrys (71) is here Today and tomorrow, bright as a button.

Anne Robinson (70) snaps and snarls in Watchdog. And John Simpson (70) has a revised contract without end to roam the world and signal something really serious when he clambers off a plane. Somehow, m’lud, I don’t think this ageism case will stick.C4’s Jon Snow is hardly past it at 67, despite a Tory MP’s suggestion to the contrary. Indeed, he’d have a bright future at Broadcasting House.

And what will Rebekah do now?

Rebekah Brooks descends on Murdoch HQ in New York to talk about her future. A what-and-where-and-how problem for a tabloid ex-star who can’t go back to the suffering Sun; a super-schmoozer politicians will run a mile from; a non-TV or movie person James Murdoch won’t want around. You could look round for a charity for her to run. But is Rupert feeling charitable?
