The Batman sequel confirmed with Robert Pattinson to return

A sequel to The Batman will definitely happen, it was confirmed today (Wednesday).

The blockbuster reboot of the comic book character, played by Robert Pattinson, proved a big hit when it opened in cinemas last month, despite its three hours' running time. The Batman's primary filming location was Liverpool, with the city transformed into the "Caped Crusader's" hometown of Gotham City.

The Liverpool Film Office today (Wednesday) confirmed a sequel was now in the pipeline. They posted on their social media account: "It's official! A sequel to #TheBatman is in the works, with writer & director @mattreevesLA and Batman himself, Robert Pattinson set to return."

The Liverpool locations featured in the first film included Anfield Cemetery, St George's Hall, and a spectacular scene in which the Liver Building was used when Batman jumped from the top of a tall building.

In 2020, American filmmaker Matt Reeves, who directed the superhero film said: "One of the things I really wanted to do because it is the centre of this story, especially the history of corruption in the city, was I wanted to present it in a way that was really fleshed out.

"I wanted it to feel like an American city you'd never been to. Let's say there's like a Gotham Square, so that's like Times Square, right, now if we shot it in Times Square then you'd be like I guess Gotham is New York.

"But in our case, it's actually going to be Liverpool and the idea is to go to Liverpool, where there is all the foundation of the Gothic architecture and then add all of the more modern structures through CG.

"But in a way, that when you see the movie, you'll be like: 'Hey where's the city, where did they shoot?' So the aspect of Gotham and realising it has been for me one of the great pleasures in getting to mount the movie."
