Peter Morgan’s play The Audience, currently in the West End with Kristin Scott Thomas, focuses on the Queen’s meetings with Britain’s prime ministers since Churchill – and now includes a scene to reflect the newly re-elected David Cameron.
Morgan wrote a new scene on the morning of the election results, as it became clear that the Conservatives had stormed to a second term. Scott Thomas, along with Mark Dexter playing Cameron, have rehearsed the material for the first performance following the election.
“In the same week as we opened The Audience it’s been particularly interesting to have experienced such a dramatic general election,” said Morgan. “This morning I have rewritten the scene in my play between the Queen and David Cameron to reflect the events of last night and this morning. Kristin Scott Thomas and Mark Dexter will be rehearsing this new dialogue this afternoon and I hope tonight’s audience in particular will enjoy our immediate response to today’s results.”
The Audience is also currently running on Broadway with Helen Mirren revisiting the character that won her an Oscar in Stephen Frears’ film The Queen. It’s not clear whether that production will also be adopting Morgan’s additional scene.
