The Athletic analyzes Vikings QB Jake Browning

Third-string quarterbacks are an oft-forgotten player on most NFL rosters throughout seasons.

But this season is not like others. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, teams might have to adjust to losing players for durations of time at a rate that’s higher than usual.

That could make the No. 3 quarterback a more valuable asset than usual. The Athletic took a look at the third-string quarterback on the Vikings: Jake Browning. Here’s what the outlet said:

“After a standout career as a four-year starter at Washington, the Vikings wanted to give Browning what amounted to his first redshirt season a year ago, leaving him on the practice squad the entire season. They gave Browning the most guaranteed money ($140,000) in the undrafted class of 2019, so they clearly feel there’s some potential there. Now, Browning has a chance to compete for the backup job behind Kirk Cousins, taking on Sean Mannion for that spot.”

Personally, I like that Browning has big-game experience with Washington. He might not be the most talented quarterback in the league, but he can provide depth and maybe even still compete for the backup position. That said, the Vikings will be best off if the team doesn’t have to use him in dire situations.
