The Ashes: Security to be beefed up to combat Just Stop Oil protest threat

Test grounds across the country are beefing up security ahead of this summer’s Ashes series, as Just Stop Oil protestors warn sports fixtures will remain a key target.

The activist group have disrupted a number of events in recent months, including Saturday’s rugby Premiership Final at Twickenham.

In a statement to Standard Sport, Just Stop Oil said it did not give pre-warning of its plans.

But the group confirmed: “We will continue to disrupt sports and cultural events until the institutions join us in civil resistance against new oil and gas.”

The number of stewards policing the boundary at Test matches is set to increase, including for the opening Test of the summer against Ireland at Lord’s on Thursday.

Some grounds could follow the Kia Oval’s lead in introducing airport-style scanners.

There is particular concern over what would happen were Just Stop Oil protestors to pour their trademark orange dye onto the pitch itself, with any clean-up effort almost certain to alter the playing conditions.
