The artist behind Glasgow's Kelvin Walkway penguins and why the figures have been spreading joy

An anonymous Glasgow artist has been placing penguin figures in the wall on Kelvin Walkway to put a smile on the faces of passers-by.

The flippered family moved in to their new home on March 17 and have been spotted taking part in a variety of activities including rock climbing, reading and much more.

The sculptor, who wishes to stay faceless, said they noticed the popular path needed some livening up and decided to take matters into their own hands.

The creative mind told Glasgow Live: "I walk along the Kelvin Walkway on the bank of the River Kelvin in Glasgow a lot and there's an area with the ruins of an old flint mill on one side of the path and an old wall on the other.

"In the wall, there's a lot of these holes that are just crying out to have something put in them. After passing it many times, I thought rather than waiting for someone else to put something in them, I thought I'd have a go myself and see if I could make something to go in those holes which could help put a smile the faces of anyone who sees them.

"However, right from the start, I decided whatever I did, I wanted to do it anonymously and just do it to entertain others rather than for any other reason.

"I started thinking about what I could make to put in the holes in the wall, and eventually I landed on the idea of penguins. They're cute, pretty much everyone likes them, and you can make sculptures of them doing lots of different things.

"They're also relatively easy to make, which is definitely a bonus for me as I'm not really an artist. I've always done various crafts like sculpting and carving things out of wood, but never on a scale like this before.

"This is really the first time I've shared anything I've made with other people. For me, it's more about finding a unique way to spread a bit of joy rather than necessarily making models, although they are fun to make, too."

Since starting the project the penguins have gone on various excursions including a recent trip to visit their fellow flightless birds at Edinburgh zoo.

Recently they were snatched from their Glasgow home which left many online outraged.

The artist was ready to give up, however, they noticed how much people missed the loveable family

They said: "The reaction so far has been brilliant and people in Glasgow have really taken them to their hearts.

"In particular, when the first batch I put out went missing I was ready to give up, but just seeing on social media how much people loved them amd how much joy it gave people gave me the boost I needed to make more of them and put them out on the wall. "

The penguins are certainly becoming a staple of Glasgow street art in the west end and many have interpreted the figures in different ways. Such as, a reference to climate change or welcoming people from other countries with open arms, however, the person behind the figures says they are just there for pure enjoyment.

The artist explained: "Really, there's no message here and they're just there to raise a smile

"But if they also make people think a bit about why penguins might have to move into a wall in Glasgow and what it would be like to have to make a new home in a new country, then that's good, too."

The figures are already making an impact with their wild adventures but the creator is constantly coming up with new ideas to keep those online and passing-by intrigued.

They said: "I really don't know where it will go from here.

"None of this has been particularly well planned and I've really just been winging it right from the start. The little scenes I've been making have certainly got more detailed and more complex, which has been fun to do and I'll just need to see where it take me."
