- The UKHSA has issued seven yellow heat health alerts for large parts of England, effective from noon on Wednesday until 6pm on Sunday, due to temperatures expected to soar as high as 32C.
- The areas include Yorkshire and The Humber, East Midlands, West Midlands, East England, South East, South West and London.
- The yellow alert, the lowest on the UKHSA’s system, warns of potential impacts on health and social services, with temperatures predicted to reach 27C on Tuesday and Wednesday, 29C on Thursday, 30C by Friday, and peak at 33C on Sunday.
- All affected areas, except Yorkshire and the Humber, have a risk score of 10 out of 16, indicating "significant impacts are possible," with the UKHSA warning of a potential rise in deaths, especially among those over 65 or with health conditions, and increased demand for health services.
- Dr Agostinho Sousa of UKHSA advises taking precautions and checking on vulnerable individuals, emphasising that even moderate heat can lead to serious health outcomes, particularly for older adults.
