The areas of Cardiff where hardly any coronavirus cases are being reported

Large parts of Cardiff are now seeing almost no coronavirus cases, latest figures have revealed.

Hyper-local data published daily by Public Health Wales shows the number of coronavirus cases and the rate of infection. And the latest data shows that the majority of areas across the capital have reported between zero and two cases in the latest seven-day rolling period.

Pontprennau has by far the highest number of cases in that period with 27. Every other area apart from one has reported single-digit figures.

Plasnewydd has seen the second-highest number of cases with 10, followed by Whitchurch with seven.

It comes as the infection rate across Wales now stands at 42.5 cases per 100,000 of population based on the seven days up to March 12, a rise from the figure of 40 reported on Tuesday but still well below the key Welsh Government benchmark of 50. The latest figure in Cardiff is 34.3 cases per 100,000 , up from 32.4 on Tuesday.

What does this data actually mean?

The data above is based on the rolling seven-day average between March 6 and March 12. It is really important to bear in mind that this data is very volatile because it covers such small areas. Where an area has a very small population even one positive case can push up the rate of cases per 100,000 significantly.

You should therefore be cautious about drawing too many conclusions directly from the information.

It comes as Wales' Health Minister Vaughan Gething has announced that all NHS and care staff in Wales will get a £735 bonus to thank them for their work during the pandemic.

He made the announcement at the Welsh Government's press briefing at 12.15pm in Cathays Park. More than 220,000 people will get the payments next month. After-tax and NI deductions, most people will receive £500.

Mr Gething said that people working in health and care had been with us "at every step of the way... to look after us".
