The Aberystwyth chicken shop Taron Egerton says is as good as any restaurant in London or Hollywood

One of Wales' most famous exports has proven he hasn't forgotten his roots, naming an Aberystwyth fried chicken takeaway as one of his favourite places to eat - with one of their chicken burgers making the cut as his ideal main course. Appearing on popular podcast Off Menu with Ed Gamble and James Acaster, actor Taron Egerton professed his love for the Aberystwyth institution.

While on the podcast he talked about visiting some of the world's fanciest restaurants in London and Hollywood, but pushed them aside for his mam's homemade curry and Aber's 'Lip Licking Fried Chicken' as his favourite meal. And for those who have had the pleasure of spending an evening at the town's famous 'Pier Pressure' nightclub, his choice will come as no surprise.

On the podcast, which was released on July 27, the actor, best known for his portrayal of Elton John in Rocketman, discussed all things food and drink - from his favorite restaurants to confessing his love for mayonnaise. A feature of each episode is when the guests are asked to choose their favourite starter, main, dessert and drink.

And with the actor spending months away from his hometown of Aberystwyth at a time, it's no surprise that his mam's curry tipped the top spot of his main course. He said it's also the meal he cooks for guests when they stay with him. Nevertheless, he couldn't miss name-checking his second choice, his favoured Aberystwyth takeaway.

He said: "I do have an honorable mention though, and it's quite different. What's the polite way of putting it... it's sort of junky. It's proper junky. There's a place in my hometown and it's called Lip Licking Fried Chicken. It's been there for a very, very, very long time. It's run and operated by one family from the area. And it's just somewhere I've been going since I first started going out with my mates.

"And I still love it. It's the type of thing that you probably shouldn't have that often because it's the type of thing that I don't think would be described as health food. But it's fried chicken, with chips, lots of mayo, they'll often put lots of grated mozzarella all over it."

And his adoration for the chicken shop on the seafront didn't end there, with him describing in detail his go-to order. Explaining to the hosts he said: "There's something that they do there that is like a chicken sandwich, with a hash brown in it, cheese, chopped lettuce and mayo.

"And I can't quite figure out if it is the most delicious thing I've ever eaten or whether it's just the flavour of my childhood and teenage years and that's why I always keep going back to it. But that is something I did also consider but perhaps the curry is nearer to my heart."

While Ed and James agreed with the sentimentality of choosing his mothers curry, they acknowledged that the "first fried chicken you have, blows your mind", and that "Finger Licking Fried Chicken sounds great".
