The A-Z Of Australian Artists You Need To Get In Your Ear Holes This Instant: Part 1
There’s just something about the Australian music industry.
It’s a vibrant, colourful scene bursting at the seams with talent, community, and above all, an opportunity for more and more young Aussies to find their voice.
This series is launching in line with Ausmusic Month, inspiring Aussies far and wide to seek out local talent and bring more of their music into their feeds.
So, in celebration of the musicians that are lucky enough to call this land their home, we’ve pulled together an alphabetical list of all the Aussie artists you need to add to your playlist, stat.
We’re talking everything from big-name acts to smaller up-and-comers with one thing in common — they’re bound to Ausify your algorithms (and your music taste). In a nutshell, there’s no better way to celebrate the diversity of our nation.
So, if you want your mates to borderline beg for you to hop on AUX, you need to get onto these artists. Prepare to transform your ear holes.
A: Amyl and the Sniffers
Okay, it’s not an Aussie music extravaganza without these guys making the cut. Hailing from Balaclava, Melbourne, Amyl and the Sniffers was formed in 2016 by bandmates Amy Taylor, Bryce Wilson, Declan Mehrtens, and Gus Romer.
From humble beginnings (AKA tiny pub gigs and an initial EP self-release), the band quickly gained a reputation in Melbs for their high-energy, sizzling live shows.
The rock band has since found international success, and held onto their distinct Australian sound, while residing in Los Angeles and working with British producer Nick Launay.
If you’re not familiar with ol’ Nicky, he’s worked with other classic Australian acts like INXS and Midnight Oil, so it’s safe to say that the band’s quintessential Aussie nature isn’t going away anytime soon.
B: Baker Boy
2019 Young Australian of the Year Danzal James Baker, known professionally as Baker Boy, is known for his original hip-hop songs that incorporate both English and Yolŋu Matha.
As a proud Yolngu rapper, dancer, and artist, Baker Boy is a triple threat like no other. His song “Cool as Hell” was nominated for several ARIAs in 2019, and the success didn’t stop there — with him winning five categories from seven nominations at the 2022 ARIA Awards.
He initially rose to national acclaim as the winner of the triple j Unearthed National Indigenous Music Awards (NIMAs) Competition in 2017, with both singles he released that year also being featured in triple j’s Hottest 100.
If you’re into classic Aussie hip-hop with a touch of R&B sprinkled in, you’ll want to add a hint of Baker Boy to your playlist.
C: CYRIL
If you’re even slightly into house or electronic music, you’ve come across Cyril Riley (known by his stage name CYRIL) before.
He grew up in Eubalong, a small, quiet town in west New South Wales, and has since cemented himself as a musical force to be reckoned with.
His remixes of popular songs like Paramore’s “Still Into You” and Mario’s “Let Me Love You” turned mainstream hits into revamped dance floor tunes. Seriously — head out on any Saturday night and you’ll hear CYRIL on the DF.
More recently, his remix of the 1978 hit “Stumblin In” (originally performed by Chris Norman and Suzki Quatro) has reached new heights thanks to TikTok, since charting in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the UK.
CYRIL’s talents span into musical instruments too, as he plays guitar, piano, and drums. That, combined with his DJ and producing prowess, makes him a musical talent like no other.
D: Darcie Haven
Australian singer-songwriter Darcie Haven is an up-and-coming musician with tracks that blend pop-esque beats with an ethereal, whimsical aura.
Having opened for Vance Joy, DMA’s, Birds of Tokyo, San Cisco, and Alex Lahey, she’s no stranger to performing on the big stage (or rather, a few of ‘em).
Haven grew up in Esperance, Western Australia, with a choir teacher for a mother who taught her how to sing. When she was 11 years old, she began taking piano and guitar lessons simply so “she could be Taylor Swift”. I get it, queen.
Her second and most recent EP, Angel of the Apocalypse, was released in August this year, and peaked at number 11 on the ARIA charts. If you really want to immerse yourself in your mind palace, Haven’s music sure scratches that itch.
E: Electric Fields
Music duo Zaachariaha Fielding and Michael Ross are the two halves that make up Electric Fields, who produce — you guessed it — electronic music, with hints of pop and soul effortlessly weaved through.
The pair combine their music with Aboriginal culture, singing in Pitjantjatjara, Yankunytjatjara, and English. In 2024, they were the first duo to represent the nation in Eurovision, performing “One Mikali (One Blood)” in Sweden.
Both Fielding and Ross auditioned for The X Factor separately before becoming a duo — Fielding in 2011, and Ross in 2013. They then began performing as Electric Fields from 2015, with their repertoire described as “Daft Punk meets Nina Simone in the Deep Forest”.
Their motto is “bypass the barriers”, with Fielding and Ross describing themselves as “two feminine brothers” and affectionately referring to each other as Mala (Fielding as “the younger sibling”) and Tjutja (Ross as the “older brother”). If you ask me, their strong bond is what makes their music that much stronger, too.
F: Folk Bitch Trio
Ah, I do love a self explanatory band name.
Folk Bitch Trio is made up of Grace Sinclair, Jeanie Pilkington, and Heide Peverelle. Their indie folk aura is perfect — think Mumford & Sons vibes.
Beginning in 2020 in Melbourne, the trio released their debut single, “Headlights”. They’ve since come out with a fair few more singles, and their debut album, Now Would Be A Good Time, was released in July this year.
Clearly the release has already been a smash success, with the album up for four ARIA Awards this year. They’re also currently in the midst of a world tour, so it’s safe to say that they’re killing it. Folk queens, rise up.
G: G Flip
Rounding us off is the icon themselves, Georgia Claire Flipo (more popularly known as G Flip). They’re a singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist-all-around-badass who first entered the music scene in 2018, and has been an everpresent force in the Australian music scene since.
They’ve released several platinum-charting singles like “Killing My Time” and “Drink Too Much”, all of which you’ve definitely heard on shuffle at your last low-fi house party.
G Flip is also a bit of a triple j fan fave, with their second studio album, Drummer, winning the 2023 triple j Award for Australian Album Of The Year.
Seven songs from the album were also voted into that year’s Hottest 100, setting the record for the most entries by a single artist in one countdown. Now that’s a flex.
So: if you’ve made it this far, let this be your sign to Ausify your playlists, once and for all. Get that Aussie goodness into your algorithm, and keep ‘em front of mind the next time you’re hitting the DJ decks or curating that kick ons playlist.
