The £201.6m transfer loss facing Tottenham if Premier League season is not completed

It's almost three weeks since Jose Mourinho's Tottenham side took to the pitch out in Germany for their Champions League clash against RB Leipzig.

Set to return to action at home to Manchester United five days later, the Lilywhites never got the chance to put things right as Premier League football was put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.

With all football in the country postponed until April 30 at the earliest, football.london understands that the FA, Premier League and English Football League are currently planning to finish the campaign behind closed doors over a period of four to six weeks starting in July.

But what if football doesn't resume and the 2019/20 season is not completed?

Alasdair Gold's Ask Me Anything about Tottenham in full

According to data published by the International Centre for Sports Studies Football Observatory (CIES), the value of Tottenham's squad could plummet as a result.

In their study of Europe's top five leagues, CIES value the Spurs squad at €787million (£699m) and their algorithm predicts a fall to €560m (£497.4m).

That means a loss of €227m (£201.6m) overall and it sees the Lilywhites come tenth in the list.

The numbers take into account a host of metrics, including expiring contracts, the players' age, career path and recent performances.

The fact that Jan Vertonghen and Michel Vorm are both out of contract at the end of the campaign would play a small part in the numbers dropping, with injuries to key players such as Harry Kane and Son Heung-min another reason for this as they just haven't featured in recent months.

CIES' findings show that Man City would lose the most at €412m (£366.2m), with fellow Premier League clubs Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea also in the top 10.

European giants Barcelona, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan also make up the top 10.
