The £18 B&Q item that expert says can help slash energy bills by £300

If you're looking to keep the heat in your home for less this winter, then a top-rated Scots builder has recommended an item you can purchase for as little as £18 in B&Q.

Darren McGhee, owner of DMG Services, recently advised that households can slash hundreds of pounds off their energy bills by insulating their home for less.

The builder, who was awarded Screwfix Top Trade Person 2019, explained that households don't have to fork out thousands to get the work done professionally, as it can be installed by anyone.

The expert explained that households can slash around £300 off their bills this winter by purchasing cheap insulation material from popular DIY stores like Wickes, B&Q and Wilko.

Speaking to the Sun, Darren said: "Fitting insulation in your loft space is the best way to stop heat escaping from your home - and it's also pretty cheap. Anyone can do this, you don't need to be a tradesperson.

"You can buy insulation from all local builder merchants or retailers such as B&Q and Wickes."

B&Q currently has the cheapest option for home insulation, with a five-star rated Diall Insulation Roll costing just £18.60.

B&Q says of its insulation: "An eco-friendly alternative to traditional glass wool insulation, this recycled plastic insulation from Diall is comfortable to work with and is completely itch free. It is extremely easy to lay and comes in handy sized rolls to fit many existing rafter spaces."

The nifty home item has managed to rack up five-star reviews from impressed shoppers, with many praising it for its easy installation and ability to keep our cold draughts.

One person said: "Easy insulation to work with, nice and soft to handle and doesn’t agitate."

Another said: "Loved it for ease of installing in my undercroft, so underneath the floor. Used a cheap staple gun where necessary, and only took a day to complete.. Hopefully, will help this winter, fingers crossed."

A third five-star reviewer wrote: "The moment I finished laying this product I instantly noticed a major and significant difference! The cold draft was gone and the warmth was kept in - which has lowered my heating bill!"

If you're thinking of installing the insulation yourself, then Darren advised households: "Do not fit the insulation tight to the eaves, as it still needs to circulate around the loft space and breathe. You should leave a 150mm gap for airflow at least so mould doesn't build up."

You can purchase the £18.60 Diall Insulation roll, (L)6m (W)0.37m (T)100mm from B&Q here.

You can ask your preferred DIY store for help and advice on which insulation product is suitable for your home, and how many rolls you'll need for your space to ensure the desired outcome.
