Thatchers giving away 100 apple trees so people can make their own cider

It's one of the Bristol area's most popular exports, but now famous cider-makers Thatchers are trying to spread a bit of the apple love to local communities.

The North Somerset-based firm is offering to give away 100 apple trees to create ten little community orchards all over the area.

The creators of Gold, Haze and Katy are inviting applications from community groups in and around Bristol, who will receive ten apple trees each, ready for planting in their own community orchards or local environments.

Thatchers said anyone whose community group has plans to plant trees this spring, they should let Thatchers know about their organisation and the piece of land they have, and 'what planting trees means to you'. On February 18, the Sandford cidermakers will choose the ten community groups to receive the 'very special apple trees'.

"During these very difficult times, we’ve all come to appreciate even more the benefits of outdoor space,” said Martin Thatcher, the fourth generation to make cider at Myrtle Farm.

“For those in towns and cities a community orchard can make such a difference to people’s well-being; in health and care environments small orchards too can provide respite and tranquillity throughout the year.”

Thatchers has more than 500 acres of its own orchards in the West Country, and they don't just provide the raw ingredients for cider. "They are a haven for wildlife and an important contributor to the local ecosystem. Insects and invertebrates, birds, bats, pheasant, deer rabbits and hares to name but a few," said a Thatchers' spokesperson.

"And of course bees are vital to the health of our trees. With hives throughout our orchards, honey bees help us ensure effective pollination at blossom time," she added.

Community groups wishing to be considered for the chance to receive ten trees from Thatchers Cider, should email info@thatcherscider.co.uk explaining about your community and why planting trees is important to you. Or visit Thatchers Facebook page for more information.
