'That's the only place' - Former Man City favourite makes Anfield atmosphere admission

Shaun Wright-Phillips has named Anfield as having the best atmosphere in the Premier League.

Home to Liverpool since the club’s inception in 1892, having previously been occupied by Everton, Anfield is one of the most iconic venues in world football. Famous nights domestically and in Europe have seen teams crumble once they heard the famous Merseyside roar.

Supporters are in for a treat next season as the stadium increases its capacity to 61,000. An expansion to the Anfield Road End will make the ground the fifth-largest in England - and the fourth-highest capacity in the Premier League.

Rival players - both past and present - have spoken about making the daunting trip to Anfield. One of the most notable advocates is Manchester United legend Gary Nevile, who often cites Liverpool as being the toughest test for opposition players.

“If it was at this time of year quite often that proved to be the case," he said earlier this year when discussing Arsenal’s fading title hopes. "If Arsenal go to Anfield and win, I would definitely say it would be their title, because the confidence from that would be unbelievable.

"Anfield is a terror of a place to go but, if they lose at Anfield, it then becomes a title race. I'm saying they're going to lose it just because they lose at Anfield, but if they win at Anfield I think they will win it."

Now, ex-Chelsea and Manchester City winger Wright-Phillips has become the latest former player to hail the Anfield noise. Speaking to Peter Crouch on his podcast, the 41-year-old went as far as to suggest Liverpool fans are the only supporters who get their stadium rocking.

“Ticket prices are so high now that all those fans who used to go week in, week out, can’t afford to go week in, week out,” Wright-Phillips said.

“So, you tend to see those fans travel to the away games which are normally the loudest (groups of fans) for each club. Apart from Anfield, that’s the only place that still rocks when you go there.”
