After Donald Trump’s repeated threats directed at Canada, it seems that the citizens of the country are no longer willing to tolerate him or his antics. In an effort to establish their stance, they are now boycotting the US altogether, with a sharp 23 per cent decline in Canadians wanting to visit the US since Trump assumed office for a second time as the President of the United States.
On October 7, Donald Trump met the Prime Minister of Canada, Mike Carney, to discuss trade and tariffs between the two countries, something that has been the topic of much conjecture in the past couple of months. Following the deliberations, the two leaders sat in the Oval Office and took questions from the press.
While those present were particularly curious to learn about the specifics of their discussion, President Trump mostly spoke ambiguously. He emphasised the interests of the US and Canada and highlighted how they were fighting for the same things, resulting in a deadlock that has been difficult to resolve. He also called Mike Carney a “very nasty” negotiator but complimented him for his role as Canada’s Prime Minister, calling him a “world-class leader.”
At a specific moment, while taking questions from the press, he was asked about the huge drop in Canadians wanting to visit the US, possibly as a sign of protest against his whimsical interests, to which he replied:
“Americans don’t wanna buy cars that are made in Canada. We have the same conflict.”
Trump followed this statement by highlighting the huge populations of people who had allegedly moved from the US but are now moving back. He also pointed out some of the investments he had made, which would pour approximately 20 trillion dollars into the US economy. He also did not let go of the opportunity and discussed Biden’s administration by highlighting that his government had not achieved what Trump’s government had.
While Trump beat his chest over his purported achievement as the US president, people on the internet were not having it. In the context of his discussion about Canada, many people took to X to vocalise their opinions. They were shocked by the world leader’s response to something as critical as this. One person wrote:
“That’s his response?? Canadians also are refusing to go to the US because some of us have ‘non white’ last names and have mixed ethnicities and are terrified we would be abducted off the streets or out of our cars and thrown in a facility without able to call anyone for help.”
Many others also echoed a similar sentiment. However, there were still some devoted Trump supporters who flooded the platform with their unfounded claims and false narratives. As Canadians refuse to come to the United States, it won’t be long before Americans also start refusing to stay in their homeland.
