Thane: Water level of Ulhas river recedes below danger mark

BADLAPUR: The Ulhas river had crossed the danger level on Wednesday evening and hence a warning was issued for the people living close to river, but the water level of the river on Thursday morning receded bringing some relief to the people.

Due to less rain since last night, the water level of the river has decreased.

According to the irrigation department, the river was flowing at a level of 14.90m at 7am on Thursday morning whereas on Wednesday at 5 pm, it had gone up 17.70m while the danger level is 17.5m.

Following which, the people living close to the river in Badlapur and Kalyan were put on alert.

On Wednesday, almost all the rivers in Thane district were overflowing due to heavy rain over the past few days.

Due to heavy rainfall in neighboring Karjat taluka of Raigad district along with Thane district, Ulhas river flowing through Karjat, Ambernath and Kalyan talukas was flowing above the danger level.

The river on Wednesday at 12 noon had crossed the warning level of 16.50m.

Looking at the water level, the Badlapur municipal council, fire brigade, local police and revenue department officials had ordered the citizens of Badlapur to stay alert.

Around 300 residents from Badlapur were shifted to safer places. Those with riverside houses in buildings were instructed to move to the upper floors. After the water level of the river receded, 300 people who were shifted were seen coming back to their homes in the morning.
