Thais need to get their act together

Thailand's Korrakot Wiriyaudomsiri, who scored the team's first goal from a corner kick, applauds fans during the match.  Wichan Charoenkiatpakul

Despite a thumping endorsement from his opposite number, Thailand coach Milovan Rajevac is distraught over the way the War Elephants conceded goals in their 4-2 AFF Suzuki Cup Group B victory over Indonesia on Saturday night.

The outcome ensured that Thailand stayed on top of the group table with six points from two games and brightened the two-time defending champions' chances of making it to the semi-finals of the biennial Southeast Asian football championship.

Indonesia coach Bima Sakti felt that this performance confirmed that Thailand looked capable of lifting their third title in a row.

"I think Thailand are a strong team," he said. "They have many good players in the midfield and forward positions and they also do well from set pieces.

"We had big problems because they got two goals from free-kicks. I think Thailand have a big chance to be champions in this tournament."

Rajevac, though happy with the win, said all wasn't well with the way the Thais played at the Rajamangala National Stadium.

"We were a little lucky to come from behind, especially as we managed to score in injury time in the first half," said Rajevac.

"In the midfield, there were some problems with controlling the game so I made a change and it was definitely important to take control of the match.

"This substitution had an effect and we definitely changed our game and played better in the second half.

"It was a tough match. Indonesia started off as the better team and took the lead but I'm happy because my players showed character and they were able to come from behind which really satisfies me. We won three points and that was the most important thing."

Rajevac was also unhappy with the manner in which his side conceded two goals.

"This is something that I'm not satisfied with, especially because we conceded goals after corner kicks, so we definitely have to improve that," he said.

"We have to tighten up a little bit and be able to defend much better in these situations."

Rajevac praised Indonesia's first-half efforts and admitted that his side may have been too pleased following the 7-0 thrashing of Timor Leste on Matchday One.

"Indonesia started the match strongly and, unfortunately, we missed two early chances and then conceded a goal," said Rajevac. "Indonesia were running a lot and put pressured on our defensive line. They forced our team to make some mistakes.

"We were a little bit too relaxed at the beginning of the match after winning the first match 7-0 and had to become more serious."

Thailand will next play against the Philippines in Bacolod on Wednesday.
