Thai AirAsia is to start direct service from Don Mueang airport to the Cambodian beach town of Sihanoukville.

The airline on Monday announced the new route, to commence on July 1, as part of its strategy to extend its network around the region from its Thai hub at Don Mueang.

“The new route is expected to serve the millions of foreign travellers who use Thailand as a hub, while for Thai travellers, Sihanoukville offers an affordable beach and cultural getaway,” Thai AirAsia chief executive officer Santisuk Klongchaiya said.

Sihanoukville, about 230 kilometres south of Phnom Penh, is also Cambodia's main deep-sea port and an investment hub, particularly for the Chinese. The former low-key, backpacker beaches in the area are now dotted with Chinese hotels and casinos, with scores more under construction.

The no-frills airline will offer four weekly flights on the route from July 1. It is the third Cambodian destination for the airline after Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
