A Texas state trooper shot during a traffic stop will make a “final sacrifice” as an organ donor, police say.

Trooper Chad Walker no long shows “viable brain activity”, but is being kept on life support to be an organ donor, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety,

“This final sacrifice embodies Trooper Walker’s actions throughout his life and service as a Texas Highway Patrol Trooper,” the DPS wrote on Twitter.

Trooper Walker was ambushed and shot after he stopped to help a driver in an apparently broken down car on Friday.

The officer had not yet come to a full stop on the hard shoulder when 37-year-old DeArthur Pinson allegedly got out of the vehicle and opened fire.

The injured officer was flown to hospital in Waco, Texas, with head and abdomen injuries.

A manhunt was launched for Pinson and he was found dead the following day from self-inflicted injuries, officials say.

Walker, who has been a member of the Texas Department of Public Safety since 2015, was married with four children aged two months to 15-years-old.
