AUSTIN, Texas _ The Texas National Guard will disinfect nursing homes across the state in an effort to limit the spread of the coronavirus.
Gov. Greg Abbott announced the "Facilities Disinfection Teams" on Wednesday, which will be formed in coordination with Texas Health and Human Services Commission.
Six disinfection teams have been deployed, according to a Wednesday news release from the governor's office.
"The training these Guardsmen have received will equip them with the knowledge and tools they need to provide this crucial assistance to these facilities," Abbott said in a statement.
Each Texas National Guard team will have personal protective equipment, ionized sprayers and vital oxide, the release said.
"Our service members have proactively trained for this mission alongside the Health and Human Services Commission and other partner agencies," Major General Tracy Norris said in a statement.
Abbott first activated the guard in March to assist the state in its response to the pandemic.
The Texas National Guard has helped test COVID-19 patients at mobile sites, manufactured personal protective equipment for health care workers and assisted Texas food banks.
