DALLAS _ Texans can help prevent mass shootings by carrying concealed guns, Attorney General Ken Paxton said Sunday, hours after 26 people were killed in a church in Sutherland Springs.
"This is going to happen again," he told Fox News. "All I can say is in Texas at least we have the opportunity to have conceal carry. And so ... there's always the opportunity that gunman will be taken out before he has the opportunity to kill very many people."
On Sunday, a man dressed in black tactical gear entered the First Baptist Church and opened fire with an assault-style rifle, authorities say.
As the gunman left the church, a resident grabbed his own rifle and confronted him. The gunman dropped his rifle and fled, and the resident pursued him.
The gunman was found dead in his vehicle, but it was unclear whether he killed himself or was mortally wounded by the resident who pursued him, officials said. The resident was not wounded.
The state's open carry laws allow licensed owners to carry guns in most public spaces.
