Texans sit at No. 24 in USA TODAY NFL Week 1 power rankings

The Houston Texans have finished as high as top-ten in power rankings and as slow as second-to-last. Nate Davis from USA TODAY adds fuel to the varying placements of the Texans in power ranking lists, placing the Texans at No. 24 in his pre-Week 1 rankings.

Davis’ reasoning to the placement goes as follow, as he says: “They don’t have Clowney, and their future is in peril after shipping out loads of draft capital for a left tackle (Laremy Tunsil) with unfulfilled potential. Pays to hire a GM, fellas.”

Houston’s ranking stands as the worst in the AFC South, behind the Jacksonville Jaguars (13), Indianapolis Colts (20), and Tennessee Titans (22). Is that fair?

Though the Texans shipped off Clowney for pennies on the dollar and paid the Miami Dolphins well for left tackle Laremy Tunsil and wide receiver Kenny Stills, the roster is talented, and to many, is upgraded after the trades.

The Texans’ first test to show they are better than perceived will be on Monday. If they can beat the New Orleans Saints (ranked No. 3) in an away game on prime-time TV, one can bet that Houston will receive a meteoric rise in next week’s version of the rankings.
