Texans sign WR Tyron Johnson to practice squad

After the Houston Texans lost practice squad member and second-year wide receiver, Vyncint Smith to the New York Jets earlier this week, they have wasted no time in finding a familiar face to take up his spot.

Rookie receiver Tyron Johnson has been signed by the Texans, just weeks after being cut by the franchise prior to Week 1.

The Oklahoma State alumnus was signed by the Texans as an undrafted free agent after this year’s draft as the team searched for depth at the position. While he did not make the 53-man roster, he did impress during the preseason.

He finished with five receptions for 75 yards, including one 44 yard reception against the Green Bay Packers in Week 1. Johnson also showed his abilities as a return specialist, which could come in handy should the Texans lose DeAndre Carter at any point this season.

Johnson has good height at 6-1 and impressive speed. It was a close call between him and Smith this preseason given their very similar styles, but ultimately Smith’s experience in the system seemed to have won him the job.
